A Nexen Energy pipeline rupture in northern Alberta, Canada that spilled 31,500 barrels per day of bitumen emulsion in mid-July could have been leaking for up to two weeks before being discovered.

Though the cause of the spill has not been determined, the company said the double-layered steel pipeline connecting the Kinosis steam-assisted gravity drainage project with the Long Lake facility had not been inspected since it was installed in 2014.
