SOUTH Africa’s government plans to gazette final technical regulations covering shale gas exploration within weeks, writes Iain Esau.

“We have finalised the (hydraulic fracturing) regulations,” said Ngoako Ramatlhodi, Minister of Mineral Resources, adding that “they will be gazetted in one month’s time”.

Shell, Falcon Oil & Gas and Bundu Gas have applied for exploration licenses in the Karoo.

Ramatlhodi was talking ahead of his budget speech to parliament where he said: “In respect of shale gas development, the petroleum industry experienced an unprecedented drop in prices recently.
