The Labor Party won last month’s state election, partly on the strength of its stance on fracking. As part of the ban, a thorough investigation into the effects of fracking will be carried out by an expert panel, which will provide an opinion as to whether the practice of fracking can be safely conducted in a highly-regulated environment, or whether it is deemed too great a risk for the Territory environment, said the government.
Northern Territory slaps ban on fracking
The new state government in Australia’s Northern Territory has, as expected, introduced a ban with immediate effect on hydraulic fracturing while an independent scientific inquiry is under way.
