KRG running hot with Atrush-1 find

Canada’s ShaMaran Petroleum and its partner Marathon Oil of the US have unveiled what they say us a major oil discovery in Iraqi Kurdistan with their Atrush-1 exploration well.

The find is the latest in a series of significant oil and gas discoveries in areas under the jurisdiction of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The Kurdish region has become a hot exploration destination for small and medium-sized international oil companies in recent years despite opposition from the federal Oil Ministry in Baghdad which sees itself as the ultimate authority in awarding concessions to foreign oil companies.

The Atrush-1 well — drilled to a total debt of 3400 metres — hit a 726 metre potential gross oil column in the Lower Cretaceous…
