China to strengthen regulations for CBM

New Guard: A series of new coal bed methane industry regulations are being developed in China.

CHINA’s government is working on a new set of rules to further regulate operations by foreign companies in the country that could squeeze some foreign coalbed methane investors out of the Chinese market.

The National Energy Administration (NEA) has entrusted one of China’s top CBM players, China United Coal-bed Methane Corporation (CUCBM), to draft the new regulation, which sources said, is expected to be finished in July or August.

Sources added that one of the key elements in the new regulation will be terms that ensure foreign companies involved in China’s CBM exploration and development sector commit to their exploration investments as defined in the production sharing contracts. “If not, they will relinquish the blocks back to their Chinese partners,” said one source.
