ExxonMobil and Rosneft start 3D seismic shoot in Black Sea acreage

US supermajor ExxonMobil and Russian state-controlled oil company Rosneft are shooting 3D seismic on their joint venture acreage in the Russian sector of the Black Sea, writes Mark Hillier.

ExxonMobil Russia president Glenn Waller told this week’s Sakhalin Oil & Gas conference that the seismic vessel Vyacheslav Tikhonov operated by Russia’s Sovcomflot started the survey work earlier this month.

The seismic is expected to cover more than 4000 square kilo­metres.

The ExxonMobil-Rosneft joint venture is also expected to begin seismic work at its Kara Sea Arctic blocks, which make up the rest of their agreed acreage next year. A first exploration well could be drilled by the partners in about 2014, Waller reiterated.
