IGas Energy hopeful of English shale potential

Coalbed methane-focused IGas Energy has suggested there is shale gas potential at one of its sites in north-west England, writes Rob Watts.

A well primarily targeting coalseams at the company’s Ince Marshes site also found a large section of shale at least 1000 feet deep.

“It’s all very exciting,” chief executive Andrew Austin told Upstream. “At target depth we were still in the shale section.”

The company said it found gas indications across the section of Bowland shale intersected by the well.

The Bowland is found in parts of central and north-western England, as well as North Wales and the Isle of Man and is the same formation as that being drilled by Cuadrilla Resources in…
