Kilchurn drill gets started

STATOIL is drilling ahead at the Kilchurn prospect following disappointing results with the Cobra exploration well in the deep-water US Gulf of Mexico, writes Anthony Guegel.

Semi-submersible rig Maersk Developer spudded the Kilchurn well on 4 January.

A spokesman for Statoil in Houston described Kilchurn, located in Green Canyon Block 404, as a “relatively un­explored” area of the otherwise prolific Miocene-aged trend.

The spokesman declined to comment on the potential reserves at Kilchurn, citing routine corporate policy. However, he added that the company is “interested” and “optimistic” about Kilchurn.

Water depth at the drilling site is about 3146 feet.
