Anadarko Sierra Leone success with Jupiter-1

Anadarko Petroleum’s African exploration success continued this week with its Jupiter-1 probe off Sierra Leone hitting 30 metres of net oil pay in a targeted Upper Cretaceous reservoir.

Although not the big discovery the partners were chasing, the deep-water well’s results reinforced the Liberian basin’s prospectivity revealed by the US ­operator’s previous probes, Venus-B1 and Mercury-1.

Located in Block SL-07b-11, Jupiter-1 was drilled by Transocean’s drillship Discoverer Spirit to a total depth of 6465 metres in 2199 metres of water.

No oil-water contact was found in Jupiter-1, so the well has been preserved for possible re-entry as the area will likely require additional evaluation, said Bob Daniels, Anadarko’s head of global exploration.
