Petrobras lays bets on Carcara wildcat

In action: Petrobras is using the semisub Sevan Driller on the Carcara wildcat.

Brazilian state-controlled oil company Petrobras is betting big on the Carcara wildcat that it hopes will become the anchor for future development of the ultra-deep water pre-salt play in Santos basin Block BM-S-8.

Petrobras and partners Galp Energia, Queiroz Galvao Exploration & Production (QGEP) and Barra Energia started drilling Carcara in December using the cylindrical semi-submersible rig Sevan Driller in 2160 metres of water, targeting a final depth at around 6900 metres.

Carcara is only the third well to be drilled inside BM-S-8. It immediately followed the Bigua probe on the same licence, which is understood to have yielded results that were less exciting than expected, despite cable tests confirming the presence of oil samples containing 25 degrees API crude in pre-salt reservoirs at depths…
