Chevron on the lookout for deep-water semisub

US supermajor Chevron has sounded out the market about the potential supply of a custom-built, harsh-environment deep-water semi-submersible to drill wells off the UK and eastern Canada.

Chevron — led by chief executive John Watson — called on drilling contractors in late January to respond to a formal tender expected to be released later this year.

The details of the tender, including the charter terms, are understood to be still in the works although a multi-year charter is believed to be on the table.

In the event the contract is awarded in the second half of this year, industry sources expect the newbuild semisub will be delivered in 2014 at the earliest. Chevron has indicated a preference for a dual-activity…
