Hawrami keeps job as Oil Minister for KRG

Ashti Hawrami has kept his job as Oil Minister in the new Cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) led by Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani.

Barzani, a member of the powerful Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), took over the premiership under a rotating system with the less powerful Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). Industry sources said the PUK unsuccessfully fought to replace Hawrami with one of its own candidates.

The PUK has traditionally ruled over the southern Sulaimanyiah region of Kurdistan but its powerbase has suffered with the rise of the opposition Goran (change) party.

The KDP is led by KRG’sPresident Massoud Barzani, whose family control most of the influential institutes in Kurdistan
