Wintershall wildcat nets Skjarfell oil discovery

GERMAN player Wintershall has struck oil at a Norwegian wildcat near its North Sea Grosbeak discovery, writes Beate Schjolberg.

The Skarfjell prospect in production licence 418 revealed an Upper Jurassic light oil reservoir of “very good quality”, with volumes estimated at between 60 million and 160 million barrels, Wintershall said.

The volumes could be even higher, depending on results of further appraisal drilling.

“The Skarfjell discovery is very exciting and the resource potential significant,” said Bernd Schrimpf, head of the German company’s Norwegian subsidiary.

“Skarfjell can serve as a focus point for other discoveries in the area and will further strengthen our position in a future development consortium.”
