New Solution: Gas flaring at Upper Chonskoye

A regional subsidiary of ­Russian-UK oil company TNK-BP, Verkhnechonskneftegaz, has opted to proceed with a project to substantially reduce the flaring of associated gas by pumping it into an underground reservoir for storage.

Since 2008, Verkhnechonskneftegaz has been developing the Upper Chonskoye oilfield in East Siberia, a new Russian oil province with fields located hundreds of kilometres away from existing gas pipeline infrastructure and major cities.

The field produces low-sulphur high-quality oil with almost no water content.

However, it has a high natural gas content. According to Verkhnechoskneftegaz’ oil production director Sergei Bragin, the company is planning to drill ­nine or 10 ­injection wells into a selected underground horizon where gas will be accumulated for future use.
