Frack rules get tougher

THE US states of Ohio and Oklahoma are poised to implement regulations governing hydraulic fracturing that will require disclosure of the chemicals used in frac fluids among other measures.

The Ohio legislature passed a wide-ranging bill that requires drillers to disclose the chemicals they use when fracturing a well and also to establish baseline water quality in drinking water wells nearby.

In Oklahoma, drillers also will be required to disclose the contents of their frac fluid through the FracFocus.org website.

Oklahoma’s fracking regulations will go into effect on 1 July.
