Riches: estimates of gas reserves in Mozambique amount to more than the volumes in the whole of Australia

Anadarko Petroleum’s continuing story of exploration success off Mozambique turned another page this week as its latest well, Atum-1, hit major volumes of gas ­believed to be connected to the recent Golfinho-1 discovery.

The US major reckons this new gas complex could have more than 30 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas held entirely within its Area 1 permit, adding that this block, ­including the Prosperidade complex, has the potential to hold about 100 Tcf of in-place gas.

Area 1’s 12th successive discovery, Atum-1 hit more than 300 net feet of gas pay in two “high-­quality” Oligocene fan systems, said the operator.
