Shell ready to go with Basra gas plant plans

SHELL is getting to grips with its flagship south Iraq gas scheme with the supermajor poised to issue major tender packages including one for the processing plant to handle associated gas from oilfields in the Basra region to feed the domestic market.

Shell’s Iraq country manager Hans Nijkamp said 5000 people were already working on the project that is initially aimed at capturing more than 700 million cubic feet per day of gas currently being burnt off at three oilfields in the south — Rumaila, Zubair and West Qurna phase one.

“Camp construction is ongoing. An engineering study is ongoing for a new natural gas liquids (NGL) plant. We already have signed 44 contracts for work,” Nijkamp said.
