Kenya boost for pipeline

Support is growing in Kenya for a pipeline to send South ­Sudanese oil to the Indian Ocean coast routed to Mombasa, despite fears of congestion and problems over complex compensation issues in the heavy populated area.

The alternative Lamu Port and Lamu Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor may envisage roads and rail infrastructure linking the coast to Pakwach in Uganda’s Albertine Graben oil play.

However, Mombasa offers an earlier opportunity to move Kenya’s own oil production, and would take advantage of existing downstream infrastructure, said National Oil Company of Kenya managing director Sumayya Hassan-Athman.

“Don’t expect a delaration of commerciality for Tullow’s Ngamia play in Turkana for two years or so,” she said.
