Malikai options on table

SHELL has a complicated task ahead at its deep-water Malikai development off Sabah, Malaysia, where it has to choose between two contractor groups vying for a contract to build the main offshore facility, write Russell Searancke and Tan Hwee Hwee.

The centerpiece of the Malikai development is a tension-leg platform that will feature an 11,000-tonne topsides to be installed on a 12,000-tonne hull.

Three global contractors — Floatec, Modec and Technip — began contesting more than a year ago for the job of building the TLP, with the two latter submitting initial bids.

The winner was expected to team up with Malaysia Marine & Heavy Engineering, which the Malaysian authorities had decided would fabricate the TLP.

However, that bid round was aborted because the commercial offers were far more expensive than Shell’s expectation.
