Two UK yards tipped to take out Cygnus contracts

Two UK yards, Heerema Hartlepool and Bifab, are strongly tipped to land long-awaited platform fabrication contracts for GDF Suez’s delayed Cygnus gas project in the UK Southern North Sea.

Cygnus is due on stream in November 2015 and will initially be developed via three bridge-linked platforms — for drilling, accommodation and process/utilities — and an outlying wellhead platform.

Projects watchers also said GDF and its partners, Centrica and Bayerngas, are assessing whether a further wellhead platform will be needed.

Assuming the contracts are awarded as expected, Heerema would fabricate the topsides of three platforms, including a 3500-tonne process and utilities deck, while Bifab would build the jackets plus a 2500-tonne living quarters module.
