Seven new oil and gas blocks are signed off

Sudan has signed off on six new oil and gas blocks and found new equity entrants for others in deals that were confirmed in a ceremony that was ­attended by President Omar Hassan el-Beshir.

The blocks are spread across both offshore and onshore acreage and are said to require about $1 billion of initial investment, ­despite tough US trade sanctions still applied against the country.

The awards are the first to be made by Khartoum since the ­departure of South Sudan last year to form an independent nation.

The new 25-year exploration and production sharing agreements have been awarded to Hong Kong, Nigerian, Australian, Canadian, Brazilian and French explorers, according to State Oil Minister Ishaq Adam Gamaa.
