Indonesia mulls over ban

Indonesia is considering imposing a ban on gas exports from new field developments in an effort to meet burgeoning domestic demand, writes Amanda Battersby.

Evita Herawati Legowo, director general for oil and gas at the Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources said that while pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas exports generate income, using volumes directly for domestic purposes would have “multiplier effects”, which would boost local industry and the national economy.

“We’ll do our best to enable this [the gas export ban]. We do have a plan for the [ban] but we still have to pay attention to the economic aspects of the development of this plan in the field,” Legowo said.
