Hess saddles up for Equus design race

US INDEPENDENT Hess is preparing to begin the crucial phase of selecting the design and fabrication team for the semi-submersible production platform for its Equus deep-water gas project in Western Australia, which is planned to provide feedstock to third-party liquefied natural gas development.

Hess is expected to seek expressions of interest from major contractors during August, and will then choose three or four groups to compete for the big turnkey contract by about October, said sources.

Bidding groups are still being formalised, but it is understood there are at least four global engineering houses with semisub designs that are very interested in competing for Equus. They are Kvaerner, Modec, SBM Offshore and Technip.

Each of these companies will team up with an offshore fabricator, and sources said there are eager yards in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia…
