Bold Afghanistan move by CNPC in the pipeline

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is due to begin building a new pipeline in Turkmenistan and is mapping out an even bolder plan to build a pipeline in war-torn Afghanistan, to import more gas to China through its West-East gas pipeline system.

Liu Tienan, director of the National Energy Administration said recently that the construction of the Turkmen section of the third West-East gas pipeline — known as Line C — will start in September this year.

He said the construction of Line C is part of a signed agreement between the Chinese and Turkmen governments last year to raise Turkmen gas exports to China by another 25 billion cubic metres per annum, in addition to the 45 Bcm per annum already agreed.
