Total sets Elgin well plug date

French major Total expects to seal the rogue G4 well at its North Sea Elgin field with a permanent plug next month, writes Rob Watts.

Total and its contractors have returned 138 staff to the Elgin platform and on to the adjacent jack-up drilling rig Rowan Viking, after they were evacuated when the G4 well blew out on 25 March, leading to a two-month gas leak.

“The key stage of putting cement plugs in place to permanently secure the well is ongoing and expected to be completed by mid-September,” Total said.
