PetroChina study likely to steer a course towards newbuild FSRU

CHINA’S top energy company PetroChina and Belgian vessel operator Exmar are involved in a study that could lead to the fabrication of a floating storage and regasification unit for the Chinese company, writes Xu Yihe.

Exmar is expected to wrap up the feasibility study at the end of August, sources said. The study, which started in June, is focused on construction of a 160,000-170,000 cubic metre unit to be deployed off China.

PetroChina will decide whether or not to go ahead with front-end engineering and design work following completion of the feasibility study.

If the project goes ahead imported gas would be exported to shore via a subsea pipeline and connected with a trunk gas line for distribution to clients.
