Petrobras has made a significant U-turn on the local content policy governing a tender for flexible pipelaying support vessels, removing a specification that larger units must be built in Brazilian shipyards

The Brazilian oil giant sees boosting the fleet of deep-water PLSV units as a vital element in developing the ultra deep-water pre-salt fields of the Santos basin.

The company awarded five-year charters for six new PLSV units in 2011, but attempts to convince the contractors to build in Brazil met with very limited success.

The only local build among these six is a 300-tonne capacity unit that Malaysia’s SapuraCrest will build at the future OSX shipyard taking shape in northern Rio de Janeiro.
