Sterling drilling at Ioana

Canadian-listed Sterling Resources has begun drilling its Ioana gas prospect in the Black Sea off Romania, writes Rob Watts.

The jack-up GSP Jupiter is drilling the Ioana-1 well, located in the XV Midia block, in a water depth of 91 metres.

The shallow-water probe is targetting about 650 billion cubic feet of gas and drilling is expected to take up to 30 days.

Following Ioana-1, the rig will move about 70 kilo­metres north to drill the Eugenia-1 well in the oil-prone XIII Pelican block.

Eugenia-1, which could hold about 120 million barrels of crude, lies in 55 metres of water. Drilling is also expected to take about 30 days.
