ExxonMobil stages a return to Colombia

Re-entering Colombia: the spudding of the Mono Arana well marks ExxonMobil's first prospecting foray in Colombia since leaving it in 2007

The Colombian unit of Latin America-focused Vetra Energy, ExxonMobil and Canacol of Canada have spudded the Mono Arana — Spider Monkey — well within the VMM-2 Block in the Middle Magdalena basin to investigate a little-explored unconventional play.

The well, part of a multi-well exploration programme, represents ExxonMobil's first prospecting foray in Colombia since leaving it following the unsuccessful Tayrona offshore well in 2007.

This first Vetra-operated shale well will only investigate the unconventional Cretaceous La Luna and Rosablanca formations.

It will be a vertical probe used for coring and logging. Two subsequent wells will be horizontal probes with multi-stage fracks. Mono Arana will also test Tertiary oil-bearing sandstone, it is understood.

ExxonMobil farmed into the VMM-2 Block earlier this year, assuming a majority stake and promising to fund the programme.
