ConocoPhillips leads Western Sale charge

Newly-independent Conoco­Phillips was the most active bidder in this week’s US Western Gulf Lease Sale 229 at the Superdome in New Orleans, placing 62 mostly uncontested apparent high bids on tracts in the sale.

The operator’s attention was concentrated on the deep-water areas of East Breaks, Port Isabel and Alaminos Canyon.

ConocoPhillips and super­major Chevron were the major players in an otherwise minor sale.

Chevron placed apparent high bids on 28 tracts, including a sweep of the most contested area of the sale — a four-block tranche in the East Breaks area west of Anadarko Petroleum’s gas-rich Nansen-Boomvang development.

Chevron’s bids totalled more than $38 million, including a $17.2 million high bid — the highest single bid of the sale — on Block 546.
