Iconic leader gives Maduro his blessing

Venezuelans are getting to grips with the likelihood that President Hugo Chavez will not be in power much longer, after the cancer-stricken leader named Vice President Nicolas Maduro as the man he would like to succeed him — shortly before undergoing surgery for a fourth time.

Chavez confirmed last week that his battle against cancer has taken a further turn for the worse.

A six-hour operation, carried out by Cuban surgeons, was described as successful, although the exact nature of the cancer Chavez is suffering from has not been clarified, apart from its location, which is said to be in the pelvic area.

Hospital visitors have included Ecuador’s President Rafaelo Correa — Chavez’s closest international ally. Correa later described the surgery as “very delicate”.

Maduro spoke on Venezuelan television describing a “complex operation” carried out “correctly and successfully”.
