Montana 'yes' to Keystone

US State Montana’s Land Board this week agreed to provide TransCanada with a parcel of easements to build its Keystone XL pipeline on state-managed lands.

The board agreed to sell the easements on condition that TransCanada secures environmental approvals for the project that will carry Canadian oil to the Texas Gulf Coast.

The pipeline — which will have an initial capacity of 830,000 barrels per day — is still awaiting US President Barak Obama’s approval.

Backers of the project said it will create jobs in the state and allow oil producers to send crude to the Gulf Coast refining sector.

However, some of Montana’s ranchers, farmers and wildlife groups have lobbied against the pipeline.
