Devon set to test Austin Chalk with Lane 64 well

Devon Energy is using its initial wildcat in the emerging Tuscaloosa Marine shale play in Louisiana to test the shallower Austin Chalk formation after striking out in the deeper shale formation.

The Oklahoma City independent has received permission from Louisiana regulators to plug back the Lane 64 well in East Feliciana Parish to complete the Selma Chalk, as the Austin Chalk formation is sometimes referred to in Louisiana.

Sources suggested that a work­over rig is already on location and has begun operations.

The Lane 64 had been shut in since October after producing minimal amounts of oil from the Tuscaloosa Marine shale as a vertical well with perforations between 15120 and 15130 feet.
