North Sea pipe leak stopped

A near two-week release involving oil and associated gas on Taqa Bratani’s Cormorant Alpha platform off the UK has been stopped, the company said.

Taqa confirmed on 28 January that the release from an oil fill line in one of the platform’s massive concrete gravity base legs had been stopped.

It was detected on 14 January and led to non-essential workers being flown off the platform and the shut-in of the Brent pipeline system.

Taqa has said the quantities of hydrocarbons involved were “small” but has refused to be more specific about the volumes.

“We are now looking at the long-term repairs for the pipe,” a Taqa spokeswoman said.
