Petrobras suspending its uncoupled riser policy

Petrobras has shaken the subsea industry by suddenly suspending a policy of developing uncoupled riser systems for the technically challenging pre-salt fields, instead reverting to flexible riser solutions.

The state-controlled company was in the middle of a tender process for the riser systems to serve two floating production, storage and offloading units on the Lula Alto and Lula Central sectors of the Santos basin field.

This was to be the third big subsea umbilical, risers and flowlines contract for the pre-salt in 2200 metres of water, after an earlier two featuring decoupled systems and rigid pipe.
