Doubling up in the Niobrara

CONOCOPHILLIPS doubled its interest in the Niobrara tight oil play in the fourth quarter as US independent Anadarko sold a chunk of its holdings in the play outside of its core Wattenberg field in Colorado, writes Noah Brenner.

ConocoPhillips added about 65,000 acres in Colorado, bringing its Niobrara position to about 130,000 acres, said Matt Fox, executive vice president, exploration and production.

The new buy lies to the south of the prolific Wattenberg field in Adams, Arapahoe, Douglass and Elbert counties.

ConocoPhillips has drilled six wells there and shot additional 3D seismic over the area as it prepares for additional drilling this year.

At the same time, Anadarko announced that it had offloaded 59,000 acres of land south of Wattenberg for $114 million, while retaining a 20% overriding interest.
