Norway’s debate over whether to allow oil companies to explore for oil on the continental shelf off the Lofoten islands has resurfaced after the ruling Labour party said it wants to start the process required to open up the area for licensing.

In a proposal for a new political platform for the next four years, the Labour party said it wants to go ahead with a formal impact assessment, which is required by law before a new area can be opened for oil and gas activity.

The proposal worked as a call to arms for environmental groups and political parties opposed to oil activities off Lofoten.

The issue has been contentious for several years, and looks set to become one of the central themes in the run-up to Norway’s general election on 9 September.
