Pinda quotes price for EAC power master plan

Prediction: Tanzania Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda

Tanzania’s Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda said that between now and 2038 about $64 billion will need to be spent in the East African Community (EAC) on power infrastructure, underpinned by current and future oil and gas discoveries.

Speaking at the opening of the 6th East African Petroleum Conference in Arusha, Tanzania, Pinda predicted that $14 billion of this huge sum will be spent before 2018 on the EAC’s Power Master-plan.

The five EAC member states — Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi — aim to install 30,000 megawatts of new power capacity over the next 25 years.

This master plan will have to co-ordinate with a regional gas master plan that the community is also working on, said Pinda.
