HIPPS is an emergency stop system that prevents high-pressure fluids migrating to a downstream piece of equipment that is not rated for that high pressure. Over the last two decades or so, subsea HIPPS have primarily been installed in gas fields in the North Sea. Now, ExxonMobil aims to install the first subsea system for oil in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico at its Julia field.
