Its chief executive may lack the build and tell-tale ears of a rugby forward, but nonetheless boasts 25 years’ hard-won experience in the oilfield services scrum with the biggest multinational players and the smallest start-ups.

Raised in Kent, Stuart Ferguson arrived in the oil business in 1987 with a first-class honours degree in chemical engineering from Birmingham University.

He worked for BP as a petroleum engineer for six years before responding to the lure of better pay – then at least – in the service sector.
