Technology leap: by AGR in deep-water drilling

Chevron is set to implement a dual gradient drilling (DGD) system from Norwegian contractor AGR on its deep-water fields in the Gulf of Mexico later this year in the first practical application of the innovative technology.

AGR is to put the technology to work in a ground-breaking pilot project after announcing the award of a well services contract with the US supermajor on Tuesday whereby it will provide DGD operational services over a five-year period on complex deep-zone wells at Chevron fields.

The deal marks a breakthrough for the contractor, which has been working with Chevron at its Houston offices for the past three years on design and development of the first fully integrated and commercial DGD system in the industry.

Evolution of the technology under the engineering phase will finally come to fruition later…
