Statoil may be forced to postpone a conceptual decision on a second train at its Snohvit LNG plant, which is due imminently, as partner Total is reported to be reluctant to move forward on the project.

The Norwegian state oil company faces a difficult decision over whether to boost the capacity of the plant on Melkoya island off Hammerfest to monetise increased reserves at the Barents Sea field or instead develop a more costly gas pipeline to the Arctic frontier region.

It comes amid intense lobbying activity from experts on both sides of the fence that has triggered a Norwegian media debate about the relative merits of either option.
