Norway unions maintain strike stand

Output hit: by strike off Norway

Norwegian trade unions put off a decision to escalate an offshore oil and gas workers strike until the end of this week as output curbs resulting from the dispute helped push Brent oil back above $100 a barrel on Tuesday.

Now in its tenth day, the strike has cut daily Norwegian oil production by an estimated 13% and gas output by around 4%, and has resulted in delays to crude shipments from the world's eighth-largest exporter.

Union leaders decided at a meeting on Tuesday against an escalation, aware that it could trigger government intervention.

"The strike is at the right level for now," SAFE union leader Hilde Marit Rysst told Reuters, adding that workers were keen to avoid government intervention in the conflict. The next meeting is scheduled for 6 July, she said.
