Santos bags Indian deep-water blocks

Australia’s Santos has been awarded two offshore deep-water exploration licences in the bay of Bengal, with a commitment to an eight-year $70 million work programme.

The oil and gas company said today it had secured 100% working interest of blocks NEC-DWN-2004/1 and NEC-DWN-2004/2 in the northern Bay of Bengal, about 250 kilometres south-east of Kolkata.

The blocks cover an area of about 16,500 square kilometres, in water depths of between 400 metres and 2300 metres.

“We are pleased to be awarded these two prospective exploration blocks providing the company with a significant offshore exploration opportunity in a frontier basin,” Santos’ managing director, John Ellice-Flint, said.

Santos was awarded the blocks as part of the Indian government’s recent aution of 52 oil and gas exploration blocks.
