Kyushu renews NWSV gas deal

By Upstream staff

The North West Shelf Venture (NWSV) participant companies said today they had signed a heads of agreement with Japan’s Kyushu Electric Power Company for the ongoing supply of liquefied natural gas from Australia’s largest resources project.

The NWSV will supply 0.73 million tonnes a year to Kyushu Electric in an eight year deal starting in April 2009.

Kyushu Electric is Japan’s fourth largest power utility with a service area that is home to about 15 million people and accounts for 9.5% of Japan’s GDP.

All eight of the NWSV's original Japanese LNG customers have now renewed their long-term purchase commitments.

The six participants in the NWSV are operator Woodside, BHP Billiton, BP, Chevron, Japan Australia LNG and Shell.

Each partner has an equal 16.7% interest in the venture.

China’s state-owned giant CNOOC is also a member of the NWSV but does not have an interest in its infrastructure.
