Trinidad rig fire injures five

By Upstream staff

Five oil workers in Trinidad were rushed to hospital in serious or critical condition after suffering burns in a fire that erupted on an oil rig on Sunday night, officials said.

The fire occurred during a well servicing exercise by a private contractor in Grand Ravine in the deep southern region of the Caribbean nation, state oil company Petrotrin said.

Petrotrin, which owns the well, said an investigation was already under way to determine the cause of the fire.

Ancil Roget, vice president of the Oilfield Workers Trade Union, said two of the five workers were in critical condition.

"We have two representatives on the investigating team and we should know in about 24 hours, the initial cause of the fire," Roget told Reuters.

Roget said the union would be following the outcome of the investigations and subsequent recommendations that would be made to avoid any recurrence.

"Too often, things happen, recommendations are made but not implemented. We're keeping our eyes on this one," he said.
