India says 'no decision' on Iran pipeline

By Upstream staff

India has yet to take a final decision on the proposed $7 billion gas pipeline from Iran via Pakistan, according to comments from junior external affairs minister Anand Sharma.

"The government is studying all the options and [will] take a final decision taking into consideration all factors, including the geopolitics of the situation," Sharma told a gas conference in India.

Sharma said India had three options before it to import gas from Iran - through a pipeline via Pakistan, to ship liquefied natural gas through tankers or buy gas from Pakistan's border.

Sharma said the government was looking at transnational pipelines to import gas to meet India's rising energy needs.

Apart from the pipeline, New Delhi is also negotiating with Iran to secure a deal that would see Tehran supply 5 million tonnes of LNG a year over a 25-year-period from 2009, Reuters said.
