Empire rig on site in Tasmania

By Upstream staff

US-based Empire Energy has said its drilling rig has arrived in Tasmania and is currently being made compliant to Australian standards prior to commencing operations.

Empire said the rig was purchased in response to the shortage of petroleum drill rigs in Australia and gives the company control over the timing of its drilling operations in Special Exploration Licence 13/98.

Empire, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Great South Land Minerals, is currently completing a A$4.4 million (US$3.7 million) seismic study of SEL 13/98 being implemented by Perth-based Terrex Seismic to define more accurately the prospects and exact drill site locations.

Empire is planning to drill 14 exploratory wells in the licence area between 2007 and 2009

Regulatory approval has been received to drill the first four wells and drilling is expected to begin as soon as the rig is certified to Australian standards.

Environmental surveys have been completed on the proposed seismic lines in the Central Highlands of Tasmania and landowner approvals have been obtained, Empire said.
