PA scores with Elyssa sidetrack

By Upstream staff

Sweden's PA Resources has hit a new oil reservoir with a sidetrack to the Elyssa-3 well, off Tunisia, that could be developed as a satellite to its nearby Didon platform.

The company said preliminary analysis suggested the sidetrack, in the Zarat permit, hit 12 metres of oil pay and 28 metres of gas and could see the field's reserves boosted by 30%. Early development of this new oil discovery, as a satellite tie-in to PA’s Didon complex, will now be assessed.

“A promising new and previously untested oil reservoir as well as several gas bearing intervals also seen in Elyssa-3 were penetrated by the well,” PA said.

However, it pointed out that the prime target zone, the Upper Cretaceous Bireno reservoir, proved to be structurally more complex than originally mapped and well results failed to meet expectations.

Drilled by the jack-up Ocean Spur, the sidetrack reached a total depth of 3170 metres in the lower part of the Upper Cretaceous, penetrating “a very interesting oil bearing limestone in the Tertiary with very good reservoir quality”.

This interval, regarded as secondary target for the well, was logged and oil samples extracted for further analysis.

PA has a 45% stake in Zarat and is partnered by Tunisian state oil company Etap.
