Qatar and Chubu strike LNG deal

By Upstream staff

Qatar has signed a liquefied natural gas supply contract with Chubu Electric Power that will see the Japanese company buy 1.2 million tonnes of LNG per annum for five years starting in 2008, a senior Chubu company official said.

The LNG price discount against crude oil will be much smaller than past contracts, the official told Dow Jones.

Qatar's Oil Minister Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah had said earlier that the deal would not divert LNG shipments now heading to Europe and the US, as production is increasing.
